CSA Week #15 (EOW Group #1)


This Week's Harvest:

Spinach--Hurray!  One of the best things to come from this cool, cool summer is our success with germinating fall spinach--it's the best-looking patch we've had!

Broccoli--Our fall broccoli crop is beautiful and we should have it for several weeks.

Fennel--Some of the most beautiful bulbs we've seen!  Fall fennel has so many great uses, it's a flavor that pairs well with tomatoes, beets, cooking greens, broccoli, just about anything.

Cherry or slicing Tomatoes--This may be your last week of tomatoes :(.  U-pick cherry tomatoes look great, sauce tomatoes are on their way out--it's now or never!

Rainbow Chard OR Curly Kale OR Collards--Your choice of tender fall greens.

Edamame OR Green Beans--Edamame is a CSA favorite, they are best simply boiled and salted, then popped out of the pods and into your mouth.  We have a small harvest of green beans this week to offer as a choice.

Yellow and Red Onions-- All purpose onions.

Cucumbers--1 or 2 from our last planting of the year.

Garlic--Now fully cured for storage

Sweet Red and Orange Italian Peppers--Carmen are long sweet red peppers--a reliable producer in a cooler summer like this one!  The orange peppers are a new a variety this year--Cornito Giallo--and we love them!

Eggplant OR Summer Squash--Last of the summer?

Lettuce--Red Bibb or Summer crisp variety


EOW Members Only:

Opal Basil--Purple basil that can be used with tomatoes, as a thai basil in curries, or to make purple basil lemonade!  Just pureed leaves with a can of lemonade concentrate, make the lemonade, and steep for 10-15 minutes.  Strain and serve.



Most vegetables this week will keep best in plastic in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.   Onions and garlic can sit on your counter and will keep for months.  Remember to keep cucumbers, and peppers in bags or bins in the fridge to avoid getting soft!


This Week's U-Pick:

Tomatillos, pickling cucumbers, spicy peppers, and sauce tomatoes are open for picking.  Not much left in the sauce tomato patch!  Harvest Limits this week will be posted at the patch and are as follows:

Sauce Tomatoes--No limit, nearly all are 2nd quality but ready for sauce!

Tomatillos--No limit

Spicy Peppers--25 peppers (there are not many left out there)

Pickling Cucumbers--1 produce bag


Herbs--Basil, cilantro, dill, mint, rosemary, chives, sage, thyme, oregano, lavender, sorrel, tarragon, and lemon balm are available for picking this week.



Groaning Cake (I LOVE the story of this cake, and  have made it with grated fennel in place of any of the grated items--treat yourself and the new mother in your life!!)

Grilled Vegetable Sandwich with Pesto

Mexican Chicken Posole Verde (I use a handful of chopped fennel fronds in this--it's awesome!  Use any peppers, and be sure to grab tomatillos and cilantro in the U-pick)
