CSA Week #12 (EOW Group #2)

This Week's Harvest:

Watermelon--Yeah!  Most of the melons are red-fleshed this week, but there will be a few orange ones and maybe even a few cantaloupe to choose from.

Eggplant and/or Summer Squash/Zucchini--these items will be in a choice bin--choose your favorites!

Cherry Tomatoes--Sun golds or a mixture of varieties.

Kale--The first of our fall greens--SO TENDER!!  We're very excited about them!  Choice of Red Russian or Green Curly Kale.

Green Beans OR Romano Beans--Romano Beans are new this week.  An Italian specialty, they are flat-podded and great for simmering with tomatoes, garlic and onion.  You can cook them exactly like green beans, with a touch longer cooking time. Or make dilly beans!

Yellow Onions-- All purpose onions.

Cucumbers--We've moved into our 3rd and last planting this week.  Hard to believe Fall is right around the corner!

Garlic--Now fully cured for storage

Bell and Sweet Italian Peppers--More color (aka sweetness) this week!

Tomatoes--Lots this week!  AND the U-pick cherry and sauce tomatoes are open!

Sweet Banana Peppers--Sweet, crisp and mild.  Great salad peppers, but also good in ratatouille or stir fry.

Carrots--Larger size, the first of our fall variety.

Cilantro or Basil--More of both in the Herb Garden

Storage:

Most vegetables this week will keep best in plastic in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.   Onions and garlic can sit on your counter and will keep for months.  Carrots will keep 1-2 months in the fridge.  Remember to keep cucumbers, squash, peppers, and eggplant in bags or bins in the fridge to avoid getting soft!

FORECAST: We have lots of great crops just around the corner!  Edamame, winter squash, more lettuce, Napa cabbage, more broccoli, fall Chard (so tender!), and more melons are all coming your way in the next few weeks.

This Week's U-Pick:

Tomatillos, spicy peppers, and sauce tomatoes are open for picking.  New this week:  Pickling Cucumbers!  Harvest Limits this week will be post at the patch.

From what we can tell, this is peak season in the sauce tomatoes and tomatillos, so carpe diem!!

Flowers (no stem limit). Herbs--Basil, cilantro, dill, mint, rosemary, chives, sage, thyme, oregano, lavender, sorrel, tarragon, and lemon balm are available for picking this week.

Recipes:

Dilly Beans

Curly Kale Salad with Sesame Soy Dressing

Roasted Tomato Salsa  (we love this!!  It freezes well and makes a great soup base too)

Mexican Chicken Soup  (We love this too.  Use fresh tomatoes now, or frozen ones or your roasted salsa later from the freezer)

3 Ingredient Carrot Slaw (great with chopped cilantro or parsley)
