CSA Week #19 (EOW Group #1)

This Week's Harvest:

Leeks--One of my favorite vegetables!  It's mellow, buttery onion flavor is wonderful in just about any soup, or in a quiche or egg tart.

Potatoes--A mix of red and yellow from our fellow farmers at Driftless Organics

Celeriac--Celery root is an intimidating vegetable, but take a knife to carve back the gnarly skin and you have a flavorful white root for soups and stews.  It's also nice grated with other roots for a raw salad.

Kohlrabi--Our fall crop is sweet and crisp, great for a raw snack with hummus or sliced into salad.

Spaghetti or Butternut Squash --Spaghetti squash can be halved and roasted, them forked out in threads for a delicious pasta alternative.  Butternut can be cubed for curry, roasted in haves, or boiled for soup.  It's very versatile!

Kale or Chard--Your choice of cooking greens.  Both freeze very well!

Salad Mix--Our spring mix is back for the fall.

Beets or Rutabaga--Your choice of roots.

Sweet potatoes--A small bag from our very disappointing crop this year.  A late start and cool summer temps resulted in very small potatoes.  Bummer!

Brussels Sprouts--Finally!  We watch these plants grow over a long season, and we're finally ready to pick them!

Yellow Onions--Basic cooking onions, they store well

Garlic--Now fully cured for storage

Sweet Red Italian Peppers--Carmen are long sweet red peppers--a reliable producer in a cooler summer like this one.

Delicata or Honey Nut Squash--Both very sweet, personal-sized squash.

Carrots--Smaller carrots this week, great for little snackers or roasting whole.

Lettuce--You'll receive one baby bibb and one dark red lettuce--either summer crisp or oakleaf.  Fall lettuce is the best!

We're getting into lots of vegetables suitable for storage into the winter!  Any roots (carrots, beets, rutabaga) can be stored in a bag in the fridge.  Sweet potatoes, squash, onions, and garlic can be stored on your counter or another dry ambient space.  Greens, as usual, can be stored up to 2 weeks in the fridge in a bag.

This Week's U-Pick:

Just herbs and cherry tomatoes remain!

Celeriac Soup with Bacon

Hearty Potato Kale Soup with Sausage
