CSA Week #6 (EOW Group #2)

This Week's Harvest:

Summer Crisp Lettuce--Very crisp and crunchy.  Summer Crisp is very similar to Romaine

Carrots--Crisp and sweet, more to come

Broccoli--This week's heads are not as pretty.  The heat and heavy rain set in--still delicious though!

Kohlrabi--Peel and slice for a crisp sweet crudite (great with hummus), or cube into stir fries.

Fennel--Delicious anise flavor, excellent grilled with summer squash and sausage or shaved into salad.

Garlic Scapes--Take all you want this week!  Fresh green garlic flavor, chop as you would a scallion and use raw or cooked.  They keep 4-5 weeks in a bag in your fridge.

Summer Squash/Zucchini--We grow a mix of green zucchini and a bicolor squash called "zephyr".  They can be used interchangeably in recipes, although I find the zephyr more sweet and buttery.

Cilantro or Dill--More of both in the U-pick Herb Garden if you can't decide.

Snow Peas (with a few snap peas)--Snow Peas are the clear survivor this year, performing much better than our poor snap pea friends.  Luckily they are sweet, crisp and delicious raw or cooked.  We love to dip them in hummus, dressing, or goat cheese.

Sweet Heirloom and Torpedo Onions--Onions are here!  These fresh ones are crisp and juicy, awesome on the grill, great in salads.  Store in the fridge or let them start to dry on your counter.

Cucumbers--Heavier harvest this week!

Fresh Garlic--Yeah!  Our first bulbs just came out of the ground.  This juicy fresh stuff packs a punch!

Frisee--frilly chicory-family green with a juicy but slightly bitter taste.  Check out CSA Newsletter Week #3 for recipes.

 

Storage:

Most vegetables this week will keep best in plastic in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.  Carrots and garlic scapes will store for 1 month or more in a bag in the fridge.  Onions will keep for a month or more as well.

 

This Week's U-Pick: Flowers are here!  No limit on stems this week.  Herbs--Basil, mint, rosemary, chives, sage, thyme, oregano, lavender, sorrel, tarragon, and lemon balm are available for picking this week.
