CSA Week #7 (EOW Group #1)

This Week's Harvest:

Blueberries--Yum!!  The first installment from our farm partners at Flyte Family Farm.  They raise organic blueberries in Coloma, WI.

Summer Crisp Lettuce--Very crisp and crunchy.  This is our main variety in the summer because it's one of the only lettuces to withstand the heat!

Carrots--Crisp and sweet, more to come

Cherry Tomatoes--First harvest, so yummy!

Kohlrabi--Peel and slice for a crisp sweet crudite (great with hummus), or cube into stir fries.

Fennel OR Napa Cabbage--Fennel: delicious anise flavor, excellent grilled with summer squash and sausage or shaved into salad (see last week's newsletter for recipes).  Napa makes a great slaw or stir fry.

Garlic Scapes--Take all you want this week--last week for these!  Fresh green garlic flavor, chop as you would a scallion and use raw or cooked.  They keep 4-5 weeks in a bag in your fridge.

Summer Squash/Zucchini--We grow a mix of green zucchini and a bicolor squash called "zephyr".  They can be used interchangeably in recipes, although I find the zephyr more sweet and buttery.

Basil--perfect with grilled veggies or make your first batch of pesto!  Lots more in the U-pick garden.  Store "bouquet-style" in a glass of water for up to 1 week.

Scallions--Use in salads, tacos, garnishing soups/stews/chili.

Sweet Heirloom and Torpedo Onions--Onions are here!  These fresh ones are crisp and juicy, awesome on the grill, great in salads.  Store in the fridge or let them start to dry on your counter.

Cucumbers--Heavier harvest this week!

Fresh Garlic--Yeah!  Our first bulbs just came out of the ground.  This juicy fresh stuff packs a punch!

Green Bell Peppers--First pepper harvest!  Most peppers start green, and so we'll see the sweet red and orange ones later in the season.

Storage:

Most vegetables this week will keep best in plastic in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.  Carrots and garlic scapes will store for 1 month or more in a bag in the fridge.  Onions will keep for a month or more as well.  Basil should be stored "bouquet-style" in a glass of water on your counter out of the sun.

This Week's U-Pick: Flowers are here!  No limit on stems this week.  Herbs--Basil, cilantro, dill, mint, rosemary, chives, sage, thyme, oregano, lavender, sorrel, tarragon, and lemon balm are available for picking this week.

Recipes:

Asian Chicken Slaw (easy to adapt to whatever ingredients you have around!)

Zucchini Frittata with Basil

Fennel-Roasted Vegetables

Summer Squash Fettuccine with Brown Butter
