CSA Week #9 (EOW Group #1)

Print This Week's Harvest: Watermelon--They're here!  Choice of round red or oblong orange variety. Celery--This is "Not-you-California-Celery" celery!  It's much more intense in flavor.  Great in soups, salads, and can be chopped and frozen for later use in cooked applications. Yellow Cooking Onions--Fresh harvested onions with a strong raw flavor and mellow when cooked.  Can be store either on the counter or in the fridge. Scallions--Fresh and mild, great in salads, grilled whole, or chopped into skillet veggies. Broccoli--The last bit for a few weeks.  Enjoy! Garlic--Very fresh and strong in flavor.  Store in a bag in your fridge, as it is not cured for storage. Sweet Corn--More organic corn from our friends at Crossroads Community Farm. Summer Squash/Zucchini--Can be used interchangeably in recipes. Cucumber--Light harvest this week as we await the next planting. Green Beans--Tender and delicious! We do not wash our beans to extend their life in your fridge, and these beans have more soil than usual because of heavy rain. Salsa Verde Kit--A favorite!  Everything you need (even a recipe card!) to make a batch of tomatillo salsa.  Love it and want more?  Our U-pick Tomatillo patch is almost ready! Cherry tomatoes--Lots more to come Heirloom and/or slicing tomatoes--Lots more this week! Green Bell Peppers--First of the season.  Sweet red peppers are on their way soon!

Storage:

Store all vegetables except tomatoes in plastic in the refrigerator.  Greens, beans, corn and squash will keep for 1-2 weeks.   Peppers and celery will keep 2-3 weeks.  Garlic and onions will keep much longer.  Keep tomatoes on your counter, but refrigerate any that you have sliced into or that are getting soft.

This Week's U-Pick: Herbs: Parsley, Cilantro, Dill, Basil, Mint, Sage, Thyme, chives, oregano, lavender, tarragon, sorrel, bronze fennel, rosemary, and lemon balm are available for picking this week.  If you haven't visited the Herb Garden, just ask us for directions when you collect your share.  Our first basil patch is ready for BIG HARVESTS for pesto!  Go for it! Pickling Cucumbers!  Plants are starting to produce, but yields will not be high.  We will set a limit on picking, and invite members to come out to pick on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday to maintain the patch.  We have 2 more plantings, so don't fret if you don't get a chance this time around! Spicy Peppers: The patch is open!  Harvest limits are posted to spread the love around. Tomatillos: The patch is open but not a lot coming in just yet.  You are welcome to search though! NOTE:  Spicy Peppers and Tomatillos are next to our sauce tomatoes, but the tomato patch is not open just yet! Flowers:  The garden is exploding! Lots to pick this week.
