CSA Week #9 (EOW Group #1)

This Week's Harvest:

Blueberries--Another installment from our farm partners at Flyte Family Farm.  They raise organic blueberries in Coloma, WI.

Eggplant--First of the season!  We love and often make a mixed grill of zucchini, onion, and eggplant with a grain and maybe sausage (extra good with that fennel that's kicking around your fridge!)

Cherry Tomatoes--Sun golds, food of the gods

Celery--This is Not Your California Celery!  Full flavor, crisp and a bit sweet.  It freezes beautifully--both the chopped stalks and the leaves!

Sweet Corn--Our farm partners at Crossroads Community Farm provide organic sweet corn to our CSA.

Summer Squash/Zucchini--Use interchangeably in recipes

Green Beans OR Dragon Tongue Beans--Veteran members are familiar with Dragon Tongue Beans!  We love them as a crisp, juicy, mild bean that can be used similarly to green beans.  You'll have a choice between these and green beans this week.

Torpedo Onions-- These fresh ones are crisp and juicy, awesome on the grill, great in salads.  Store in the fridge or let them start to dry on your counter.

Cucumbers--Time for some cucumber mint syrup?

Fresh Garlic--Yeah!  Our first bulbs just came out of the ground.  This juicy fresh stuff packs a punch!

Green Bell Peppers--Most peppers start green, and so we'll see the sweet red and orange ones later in the season.

Salsa Verde Kit--One of our FAVORITE THINGS to distribute!  All the fixings for a delicious tomatillo salsa, complete with recipe.

Tomatoes--Finally!  It's a late season for sure.  We anticipate u-pick tomatoes next week!

Broccoli--Our best of the season so far, which is not something we normally say in August (HOT month, not normally broccoli weather).  Glad it finally got it together :).

Storage:

Most vegetables this week will keep best in plastic in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.  Carrots and garlic scapes will store for 1 month or more in a bag in the fridge.  Onions will keep for a month or more as well.

This Week's U-Pick: Flowers are here!  No limit on stems this week.  Herbs--Basil, cilantro, dill, mint, rosemary, chives, sage, thyme, oregano, lavender, sorrel, tarragon, and lemon balm are available for picking this week.

Recipes:

Grilled Torpedo Onions

Roasted Corn, Black Bean, and Tomato Salad

One-Pan Ratatouille

Celery and Cucumber Salad with Herbs (from last week, because I love it.  Be sure to grab parsley and mint from the herb garden!)

Basic Corn Chowder (I add celery as well)
