Just so many chances…

Reflecting on the season that is quickly passing, it's hard not to feel humbled by just how few chances we really have to get things right on the farm.  Each season presents its unique package of challenges and advantages, improvements and luck (good and bad!).  Each year is another chance to take what I've learned and try again, but sometimes that space of time before I can try again is excruciating.  We live with a poor onion crop for nearly a year before the next one can replace it.  That year's window between chances is so unlike most other areas of life--we're more and more used to instant feedback and the ability to throw away mistakes.  The farm sets its own terms on that, a farming decision that I don't get to make.  It takes more patience, resilience, and acceptance than I ever imagined--more than I currently possess, but I'm getting better all the time. So how many chances--years-- will I have in the end?  30?  As we close on our 13th season, is it possible I'm almost halfway through my chances?  Time has passed so quickly since I began Blue Moon, it feels like yesterday we were launching our first year of CSA.  However I also know that it's a much better farm than it was, and we work much smarter than we used to.  As my 40th birthday quickly approaches, my body is telling me I've been doing this a while, but I also feel ready and so very excited to keep farming for as many chances as I'm given. Next week we'll talk more about the "Hits and Misses" of the season, and the many dedicated people who make it all happen here, but first I just want to thank you, our wonderful community of customers, for allowing us to do what we love every day, and I hope you do too!  Life is short, just so many chances to get things right 🙂
